These 3 Issues Mean You May Have Damaged Ductwork

December 7, 2021

The ductwork in your home moves heat and conditioned air from the furnace and air conditioner to different rooms throughout your house. If these ducts develop cracks or holes and heated air escapes, it may cause cold or hot spots in your house and make your Lebanon, TN, furnace work harder to maintain thermostat temperatures. Here are three signs that your ductwork may have damage.

1. High Energy Bills

If the ductwork develops cracks or holes, conditioned or heated air will escape, usually into the attic or basement spaces. The HVAC system will then work harder to maintain the temperature you set on the thermostat. Your HVAC system will consume more energy to heat or cool a room, and this will result in high energy bills.

Check the bills you’ve paid over the past few months or years. If there’s been a significant increase lately, then it’s likely you have leaky ducts.

2. Reduced Rate of Airflow Through Ductwork

Holes and cracks allow pests, dust, spores and debris to accumulate in your ducts. These substances, coupled with the lost air, cause reduced airflow in your ducts. With the obstructions, conditioned and heated air does not circulate freely and efficiently throughout your home.

Failure of the HVAC system to circulate air efficiently leads to hot or cold spots in your house. You can keep this from happening by allowing an HVAC technician to check your ducts routinely.

3. Poor Indoor Air Quality

If there’s excessive dust in your home, or if you notice household members with allergies have increased reactions, pollutants in the ductwork might be the problem. Poor indoor air quality can cause several health issues, including headaches, irritation in the eyes and skin, breathlessness, coughing, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and sneezing.
